The Healthy People, Healthy Communities, Healthy Florida Program incorporates assuring safe drinking water into its goals and strategies. The Florida Department of Health Strategic Plan sets similar goals.

Goals
  • Reduce outbreaks of waterborne disease from infectious agents and chemicals.
  • Increase the proportion of people who have a drinking water supply that meets all USEPA standards.
  • Reduce the population exposed to potentially unsafe drinking water.
  • Reduce the water-borne intestinal disease case rate.

Strategies

  • Expand public education for private well owners - - particularly those in highly vulnerable areas.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive public education program on the Florida Safe Drinking Water Act.
  • Promote communications and coordination among the Department of Health, Department of Environmental Protection, and Water Management Districts.
  • Expand groundwater monitoring in highly vulnerable areas to detect known and suspected pollutants.
